LENTIL FRITTERS ARE A DELICIOUS south asian classic THAT PACKS A SPICY PUNCH AND crunch.


Serves: 4 - 6 people

Cook Time: 45 minutes


INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup of red lentils (masoor dal) soaked for 3 hours.

  • 4 finely chopped green Thai chilis (lower the quantity of chilis if your spice tolerance is low)

  • 1 tsp of turmeric powder

  • 1 tsp of chili powder

  • 1 tsp of garlic powder

  • 1 tsp of cumin powder

  • 1 tsp of salt (adjust per your taste) 

  • 1 medium sized chopped onion

  • ½ cup of chopped cilantro

  • 2 tbsp of besan flour 

  • ½ cup of oil (for frying)


INSTRUCTIONS:

⋄ Step 1:

Using a medium bowl, soak 1 cup of red lentils in water for approximately 3 hours.

⋄ Step 2:

After soaking, place your lentils in a blender and blend. Pour the blended lentil mixture in a large bowl, add 4 finely chopped green Thai chilis, 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon of chili powder, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of cumin powder, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 medium sized chopped onion, ½ cup of chopped cilantro, and 2 tablespoons of besan flour. Mix thoroughly for 2 minutes.

⋄ Step 3:

Using a large pan, add ½ cup of oil under medium-high heat. Once oil is hot, decrease the heat to medium-low heat and carefully place spoonfuls of the lentil mixture into the pan one at a time leaving space between each fritter.Gently flatten pieces as you fry both sides, occasionally flipping as needed. Cook lentils for about 4 minutes (or until both sides are golden brown).

Serve hot as an appetizer or serve as a side to your favorite NNH entree.
